ROYAL PRINCESS 1ST CRUISE COVER

The ship now sailing under the name "Artania" began it's life at sea as the "Royal Princess" back in 1984. In fact, she was christened by a real-life Princess - Diana, just a few days before her maiden voyage from Southampton to Miami. This lovely British cover, with a color cachet of the cruise ship, has a November 19, 1984 pictorial postmark commemorating that Maiden Cruise.

1953 QEII CORONATION FDC SET

In 1953, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated in every corner of the British Empire. Seventy-eight countries on six different continents issued stamps commemorating the occasion. Most of the stamps feature similar designs, with the only differences being the country name, denomination, and stamp color. Different stamp designs were also issued by 16 members of the Empire with most of them issuing multiple stamps. In total, there were 106 stamps issued by 78 countries. We have assembled the entire set on 78 First Day Covers, all featuring an engraved ArtCraft cachet designed for the occasion. As a bonus, we have included a First Day canceled British QEII Coronation Aerogramme in the set.

1963 NZ PRINCE ANDREW SEMIPOSTALS

Judging by the big smile on Prince Andrew's face on these New Zealand semipostals, he must have been a very happy young boy in 1963. And why not, after all he was a prince! The stamps were printed in minisheets of six. One (#B65a) is engraved in blue and shows the boy with a book in his lap, while the other (#B66a) features a more formal pose engraved in red. 1962 FRENCH TELSTAR FDC

The world became a little smaller when the Telstar satellite began relaying American television and telephone signals to Great Britain and France in 1962. The French post office was one of the partners in the international venture and commemorated its success with a stamp (#1048) and First Day Cover issued September 29, 1962. We offer that unaddressed FDC with its multicolor cachet as a memento of the early days of the Space Age.

1956 MONACO ROYAL WEDDING FDC

This black engraved ArtCraft cover commemorates the Wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier on April 19, 1956. Four of the Monaco stamps issued on that date to commemorate the royal wedding (#366-9) are affixed to this cover; two on the front and two on the back. Each pair is neatly hand-canceled with a pictorial postmark featuring a crown.

BERLIN WALL ANNIVERSARY COVER

Just after midnight on August 13, 1961, the East German police began to close the border with West Berlin. By morning, streets had been torn up, barbed wire installed, checkpoints erected and construction of the Berlin Wall had begun. The 20th anniversary of that infamous date is commemorated on this Washington Press cacheted cover postmarked in Berlin on August 13, 1981. This historical memento cover is neatly type addressed.

1972 OLYMPICS JAL SPECIAL FLIGHT

First Flight Covers sponsored by Japan Air Lines are invariably attractive, with colorful cachets nicely franked with neatly canceled commemoratives. This JAL Flight Cover shares all of those attributes and also has strong historic and topical interest. It commemorates a Special Flight from Tokyo to the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich. The cachet features the German flag and Olympic rings. A German backstamp on the Opening Day of the Games also includes the rings.

VATICAN STAMPS CENTENARY MNH

The 1952 commemorative for the Centenary of Vatican stamps (#155) features a stamp-on-stamp design. The first Roman States stamp is reproduced in one corner while the rest of this nicely engraved commem pictures a stagecoach (carrying mail no doubt!) being pulled through the Italian countryside by a handsome team of four horses. 1947 ARTCRAFT CANADA FDC

In 1947, ArtCraft began making cachets for Canadian stamps. This FDC of the Canadian Citizenship issue (#275) is the second creation in that series. It features a birds eye view of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa along with a maple leaf and the walking figure from the stamp. The cover is canceled July 1, 1947 in Ottawa.

COSTA RICA 1963 CHRISTMAS SET

Since 1958, Costa Rica has produced postal tax stamps that were required on all mail sent during the month of December. The revenues raised are used to support the charitable work of Children's Village. This set of four such stamps (#RA16-19) was issued in 1963. The designs include paintings by Rubens, Bellini, and Melozzo, plus a portrait of Monsignor Herrera; the Archbishop of San Jose. We offer the set in mint, never hinged condition.

1985 LUXEMBOURG WWII MINISHEET

On the 40th anniversary of VE Day, May 8, 1985, Luxembourg issued a souvenir sheet of 4 stamps (#731) honoring the country's heroes and martyrs of World War II. The stamps depict a resistance fighter and the Wounded Fighters Medal, the War Cross, the Badge of the Union of Luxembourg Resistance Movements, and the Liberation of the concentration camps. The mint never hinged sheet of four stamps is a reminder of a tiny country's contribution to the Allies war effort.

PHILIPPINES 1947 QUEZON/FDR TRIO

The first airmail stamps issued after Philippine independence feature Philippine President Quezon and American President Roosevelt. Manuel L. Quezon, who died in exile in the United States in 1944, was the second Philippine President and the first to be nationally elected. The two presidents are shown with the flags of their countries on three stamps (#C64-66) that share a common design: a 6¢ green, a 40¢ orange, and an 80¢ blue. The set of three engraved airs is offered in very fine, mint, never hinged condition.

1962 CEYLON MALARIA FDC TRIO

This is an interesting set of covers for two completely different reasons. First, the obvious. The stamp (#364) on these First Day Covers was issued by Ceylon on April 7, 1962 to promote the World Health Organization's drive to eradicate malaria. The Oriental Stamp Service cachet was printed in three color varieties - blue, orange, and green - which we offer as a set. But the address and postal marking on the covers also tells a story about the history of Washington Press. The typed address is our original home in Newark. In 1962 we moved to the forwarding address stamped on the cover. (We have been at our current address since 1980).

1951 CANADA ROYAL VISIT FDC

Because of King George VI's declining health, his daughter Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, and her husband Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, stood in for him during a 1951 tour of Canada and the United States. To mark the occasion, Canada issued a commemorative (#315) on October 26, 1951 showing the Royal couple. We offer a type-addressed FDC of that stamp that features an explanatory cachet with silhouettes of their Royal Highnesses.

CEYLON 1962 BOY SCOUTS FDC

Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Boy Scouts by issuing a commemorative (#363) featuring the Scout emblem on February 26, 1962. We offer a First Day Cover with an Oriental Stamp Service cachet that includes a Boy Scout, the Scout emblem, and text describing the event. It would be a nice addition to a Scouts topical collection.

1919 GB 5 SHILLING SEAHORSES USED

The design of this early British classic makes it look almost like two stamps. On the left is a large wreath-framed profile portrait of King George V and on the right side an allegorical figure of the warrior Britannia holding a shield in one hand and a trident in the other while commanding three powerful horses through a turbulent sea. This 5-shilling carmine rose stamp (#180) is the 1919 retouched engraving printed by Bradbury Wilkinson of what has come to be known as the Seahorses issue. We offer it in fine to very fine used condition.

GB 2006 CHILDRENS BOOKS PAIR

Royal Mail issued a set of eight Children's Book Animals stamps on January 10, 2006, two of which were jointly issued with the United States. That pair (#2340-41) features Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Maisy's ABC" by Lucy Cousins. The caterpillar stamp design includes two holes, evidence of just how hungry he really is! This playful setenant pair of 68p stamps in very fine mint never hinged condition is sure to delight both young and not so young collectors.

1998 GB DIANA MEMORIAL ISSUE

After the tragic death of Princess Diana on August 31, 1997, Great Britain issued a set of five memorial stamps (#1791-5). Five different portraits of the beloved Princess of Wales are the subjects of those stamps, which were issued February 3, 1998. Each portrait is simply framed in purple with Diana's years of birth and death at the bottom. We offer the strip of five stamps in very fine mint never hinged condition.

PORTUGAL 1992 COLUMBIAN SS SET

Portugal issued a set of six souvenir sheets (#1918-23) in 1992 very similar to the Columbian reprints issued by the USPS. The designs of the sixteen original Columbians of 1893 are the basis for the Portuguese set. Because the stamps also served as Portugal's Europa issue for 1992, they are in demand from collectors of Europa, Columbus, and Portugal. ORANGE FREE STATE CENTENARY COVER

South Africa recognized the Centenary of the Orange Free State in 1954 with the issue of two commemoratives (#198-99). The O.F.S. (the present day Free State Province) became an independent Boer republic when the British granted sovereignty at the Bloemfontein Convention on February 23, 1854. This South African First Day Cover features a hand designed color cachet including a scroll, the flag of the O.F.S. and the Old Raadzaal where the treaty was signed.

CANADA WINNIE THE POOH FDC

This delightful Canadian First Day Cover tells the story of how Winnie the Pooh came to be. The setenant block of four stamps (#1621a) on the cover features the main actors in Pooh's evolution including a Canadian soldier, a little boy and his teddy bear, the illustrations of English cartoonist E. H. Shepard, and the modern Disney rendition of A. A. Milne's creation. The official Canada Post FDC includes a "hunny" pot in the October 1, 1996 first day cancellation, along with a color cachet based on the Disney stamp art. The full story (in English and French) is printed on the cover's back flap.

1959 REPUBLIQUE DU TOGO MINT SET

The postage stamps of the Western African nation of Togo reflect the stages of it's struggle for independence with numerous variations of the country's name appearing on stamps. The 1959 set we offer here includes 14 regular issues (#350-63), 5 airmails (#C26-30), and 7 postage dues (#J49-55) all inscribed "Republique Du Togo." All 26 stamps are nicely engraved and are in very fine mint never hinged condition.

IRELAND 1984 EUROPA MINT SET

In 1984, the member nations of CEPT, the coordinating body for European telecommunications and postal services, chose to use a common design for their annual Europa stamps. The stamps marked the 25th anniversary of the organization by using a bridge as a symbolic central design element. Interest in Europa issues has always been strong, and some of the issues, including these two from Ireland, have become difficult to find. We offer the set - a 26p blue (#592) and a 29p green (#593) - in very fine, mint, never hinged condition.

ROC 1960 FORESTRY SOUVENIR SHEET

Included in the nearly 2,000 participants from 65 countries who traveled to Seattle for the Fifth World Forestry Congress in 1960 was a delegation from the Republic of China. The ROC postal service celebrated the country's participation in this multinational gathering by issuing a souvenir sheet of three imperforate stamps (#1269a). This attractive issue has text in both Chinese and English and is offered mint and never hinged.

IRELAND 1957 ADMIRAL BROWN SET

The real life story of William Brown reads like an action adventure novel. Born in 1777, in Foxford, County Mayo, at the age of seven Brown moved with his family to Philadelphia where a chance encounter began his seafaring life. Ultimately Brown became the Father of the Argentine Navy and a national hero in both Argentina and Ireland. To commemorate the centenary of his death, Ireland issued two stamps, a 3p blue (#161) and 1sh 3p red (#162) in 1957. 1984 ITALY HORSE RACE SET

The biggest horse race in Italy, the "Derby Italiano," has been run at the Capannelle Racecourse in Rome annually since 1884. This pair of Italian stamps (#1597-98) was issued in 1984 to celebrate the centenary of the prestigious event. Valued at 250 and 400 lire, the two lithographed and engraved stamps feature action scenes with jockeys astride their racing thoroughbreds. The two are very fine, mint and never hinged.

ISRAEL MINT 1949 TABUL SHEET

On May 1, 1949, the newly independent State of Israel was not quite one year old when it opened its first national stamp exhibition, TABUL. An imperforate souvenir sheet of four stamps was prepared and sold at the exhibition. The design of that TABUL souvenir sheet (Scott #16) features an ancient Judean coin and was previously used in the first set of Israeli stamps. Offered in very fine, mint, never hinged condition, this is a key item in any Israel stamp collection.

1969 SAMOA MOON LANDING FDC

When man first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, postal services around the world enthusiastically commemorated the milestone in human history. One of the first to do so was the Western Samoa Post Office, which issued a stamp honoring the U.S. Moon astronauts on July 24, 1969, the date the Apollo 11 crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. ISLE OF MAN PRINCESS DIANA FDCS

The tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997 shocked and saddened millions of people around the world. Diana had a unique ability to connect with all types of people and championed the causes of many of the poorest and most desperate. It is no wonder that so many stamps have been issued to commemorate the life of this special woman. We offer a pair of First Day Covers of two such stamps issued by the Isle of Man. One shows Diana kneeling to accept flowers from a child (#793b) and the other is a charming candid portrait of the Princess with her hand on the side of her face (#793c). SIERRA LEONE LADY LIBERTY FDC

From the West African nation of Sierra Leone comes this First Day Cover franked with two stamps commemorating the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty. In addition to featuring Lady Liberty, each stamp shows a view of Times Square in New York, one from 1905 and the other from 1986. The stamps (#750 and #751) are canceled on the first day, March 11, 1986, in Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital. The cachet on this unaddressed cover focuses on the Statue of Liberty's torch.

Within two weeks of the death of Pope John Paul II on April 2, 2005, Austria issued a stamp honoring the beloved pontiff. This First Day Cover of that stamp (#1991) includes a color cachet of the Pope with a young Austrian girl in traditional dress. VATICAN MICHELANGELO MAXICARDS

The 400th anniversary of the death of Michaelangelo Buonarotti was commemorated in a set of five Vatican City stamps issued June 16, 1964. The set (#387-391) includes Michelangelo's paintings from the Sistine Chapel of the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Joel, the Delphie Sibyl and a painting of Michelangelo by Jacopino del Conte. The five single color engraved stamps have been affixed to full color post cards of the same paintings and canceled on the First Day of Issue. 1935 NEW ZEALAND KEYHOLE STAMP

New Zealand's 1935 1p + 1p Health semipostal (Scott #B8) has a strange design. In the center of the vertically arranged scarlet-colored stamp is a child in bathing attire on a beach, and we see this image through a keyhole. Why did the designer want to convey the impression of spying on the child? We can't imagine. In any event, we have mint, never hinged copies of the adhesive in stock.

1958 VATICAN BRUSSELS FAIR FDC

Vatican City issued a set of four stamps (#239-42) for the 1958 Brussels Fair. Pope Pius XII is pictured on 35 lira and 300 lira stamps, while the Vatican Pavilion at the fair is the subject of the 60 and 100 lira stamps. This Vatican City First Day Cover includes all four; first day canceled on June 19, 1958. A full color cachet features the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and the cross at the top of the Vatican Pavilion.

1933 VATICAN SEMI-POSTAL SET

Semi-postals, commonly called ?charity stamps,? have been issued by many postal administrations to help support worthy causes. In addition to the postage value, semi-postals have a surcharge added which benefits a particular charity. In 1933, Vatican City issued its only set of semi-postals (#B1-4); a quartet which shares a common Cross and Orb design, with each value printed in a different color. It is very difficult to find never hinged mint sets of this issue, so we were excited when we discovered a few in an old stock book. We are pleased to be able to offer this mint never hinged set with very fine centering to our customers.

1953 AUSTRALIA YOUNG FARMERS FDC

Australia, on September 3rd, 1953, issued a green and brown engraved 3 1/2p stamp (Scott #262) to mark the 25th Anniversary of the country's Young Farmers' Club. The engraved stamp shows a boy and girl with a calf. We are offering a First Day Cover of this commemorative , with a two-color cachet featuring a bucolic farming scene. The cover is neatly postmarked from Perth in Western Australia.

SWEDEN GRETA GARBO BOOKLET

In 2005, the postal administration of Sweden joined with the United States Postal Service to commemorate Greta Garbo. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of the Swedish movie star's birth. The Swedish stamps were issued in a booklet of four 10 kroner stamps with two each of two different designs. One design was based on the same portrait as the U.S. stamp, while the second design featured a clever pen and ink caricature of Greta Garbo. VATICAN 1961 NATIVITY MAXIMUM

A Chinese version of the Nativity by Luca Ch'en is reproduced on this colorful maximum card, which is franked with a Vatican stamp (#323) that shows a mirror image of the same scene. The multicolor is tied to the card by a Vatican postmark of November 25, 1961, which was the first day of this Christmas commemorative.

DOMINICA CHRISTMAS CAROL SET

This delightful set of four stamps (#304-7) from the Caribbean nation of Dominica features scenes from the beloved Charles Dickens novella "A Christmas Carol". The designs, which are based on illustrations from the first edition of the timeless holiday classic, include: Marley's ghost; Fezziwig's Ball; Scrooge at his nephew's Christmas party; and the ghost of Christmas present. The stamps were issued in 1970, the 100th anniversary of Dickens's death, and because Dominica was a British crown colony at the time, the Queen's head appears on each stamp. GERMAN FAIRY TALES SEMI-POSTALS

Germany has a long tradition of issuing semi-postals (sometimes called "charity stamps") which are sold with a surtax added to the postal value of the stamp. During the 1960s many of these stamps used children's fairy tales as their subjects. HONG KONG 1970 YEAR OF DOG SET

Stamps of the former British crown colony of Hong Kong have been skyrocketing in price over the past couple of years, and stocks simply are disappearing as the buying frenzy continues throughout the world. U. S. President Richard Nixon met with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican on March 2, 1969, and we have a cover marking the meeting. BRITISH 1983 MOUNTBATTEN COVER

Earl Mountbatten of Burma was a member of the British royal family and a World War II naval leader, the last Viceroy of India, and the subcontinent's first Governor General. Irish terrorists killed him in 1979. Four years later, on November 2, 1983, Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a statue of him in London, and we have a cover commemorating the occasion. Its postmark notes the event, the cachet has a full color Mountbatten portrait, and on the back is biographical material. All in all, this is a fine collectible.

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON FDC

Everyone knows favorite children's author Robert Louis Stevenson, so there's no need to dwell on him, but few realize that he was buried on Mt. Maea in Western Samoa. On the seventy-fifth anniversary of his death, his adopted island country issued a stamp (in an unusual open book design) showing him and one of his familiar characters. We have a cacheted first day cover franked with the multicolor, which is tied by a pictorial postmark depicting Stevenson's tomb.

New Zealand began issuing semipostals over seventy years ago to raise money for charities, and here are the first two: a 1929 scarlet 1p + 1p featuring a nurse and "Help Stamp Out Tuberculosis, 1929," plus a similar 1930 stamp with a different inscription: "Help Promote Health, 1930." GERMANY 1936 HORSE RACE SHEET

From 1936 we offer a rarely seen German souvenir sheet with a stamp depicting a horse race. The 42 pfennig sheet (Scott #B90) was sold with a surcharge to raise money for funding a 100,000 mark sweepstakes prize in the Munich race ("Munchen Riem 1936"). CANADA 1927 3¢ PARLIAMENT MINT

The Parliament Building at Ottawa is the subject of a 3¢ stamp that's part of a set Canada issued in 1927 for the sixtieth anniversary of Canadian Confederation. It's a brown-carmine commemorative (#143) that's an outstanding example of engraving artistry. SWEDEN NOBEL CENTENARY BOOKLET

The Nobel Prize turned 100 in 2001, and the anniversary was marked by the joint issuance of stamps by the USPS and Sweden Post. The Swedish stamps which we offer here were issued in a se-tenant booklet of four. One design is the same as the U.S. stamp (#3504) and features a profile portrait of Alfred Nobel. The other three stamps picture the medals awarded for physiology and medicine, physics and chemistry, and literature. The four stamps were designed by Olof Baldursdottir and engraved by Czeslaw Slania. Add this mint booklet of four to your collection.

PALAU 1983 WILSON ARTCRAFT FD

The Pacific island country of Palau in 1983 commemorated Captain Henry Wilson's 1783 voyage of discovery, during which he visited Palau. In 1908, Canada's postal service noted the 300th anniversary of the city of Quebec by issuing a set of eight stamps (Scott #96-103) celebrating the rich history of Canada's oldest city.
